If you have been to Taiwan, or the night market, you probably know what a wheel cake is. It is basically toppings (savory or sweet) wrapped in a crispy shell. We are glad that JoDeen Cafe has opened on July 2nd to specialize serving wheel cake dessert. The store is still in their soft opening stage, so things are quite chaotic as expected. You may want to wait to visit JoDeen Cafe after they have ironed out most of the wrinkles, but we are excited to tell you that their desserts and drinks’ taste are spot on. JoDeen Cafe is located at the corner of Kingsway and Gilley Avenue, just around the corner.
Strength: Delicious wheel cake and bubble tea
Weakness: Slow serving speed and poor customer service.
Cozy decor with a chaotic foyer
Upon entering JoDeen Cafe, the first thing you see is an alcove with a huge wheel cake on a turquoise wall. Behind this wall, is the counter where customers check the flavor availability with the staff and make decision on the spot. On top of that, this area is also being used as the waiting area. Due to the slow serving speed, this small foyer is very congested. Aside from the foyer, the store has a linear layout with tables by the windows fed through one corridor. Customers can enjoy their peace with relative low traffic passing by. The interior decor uses a lot of wooden elements to create that cozy feeling.
Delicious wheel cake with moderate sweetness
When we arrived, there were only 2 flavours left, so we only got to taste the custard, and taro wheel cake. They are $3.25 each, so they are not cheap. However, if you see how the staff took their time to slowly cooking, and sealing each of these cakes, the cost seems justifiable. The sweetness level of these 2 flavors are leaning towards the light side, so I don’t feel as guilty as eating other sweet desserts. You can see that the top and bottom of the wheel cake are thicker, so unfortunately, the sides do break with leaking toppings when you bite into them.
Tasty drinks having no option to customize ice level is unfortunate
First of all, the drinks tastes great. They are The hazelnut latte (left of image above) was on par with ones you would get from Starbucks. The only complaint for this drink is that the staff didn’t allow me to reduce the amount of ice in it, and half of the cup was filled with ice. The JoDeen Milk Tea (right of image above) was also very tasty. It has a hint of honey with subtle taste of Assam tea with every sip and it’s definitely worth trying.
604 Food Critic Assessment
Even though the store was chaotic when we arrived JoDeen Cafe on the 3rd day of their soft opening, the food and drinks were very tasty. Wheel Cake was not only filled with toppings that squeeze out from the side with every bite, but also with a crispy shell that remained crispy after my 10 minutes drive home. The drinks quality also speaks for itself. At the time this article is written, the customer service needs the most attention. Ice level customization should be standard in 2021. Dessert and drinks should be served within 30 minutes. I’m hopeful that JoDeen can figure these details out in due time. By then, I can honestly recommend this cafe on all aspects.
